What is Mining for Truth

Mining for Truth is a monthly Thinking Matters gathering held in Hamilton which seeks to deepen people’s understanding and awareness of various Christian issues and culturally relevant topics discussed from a biblical worldview.

Every month, we invite a guest speaker to present on a given topic with periodic breaks in their talk to encourage discussion both with the speaker and those around you.  The point of this is to allow you to soak up the information you just heard, process it with your neighbors, and perhaps even challenge others with a different point of view.

We are planning our 2021 events and look forward to being back soon!

Gospel Truth

Getting it right when it comes to the Gospel.

We all know what the Gospel is… don’t we? Maybe, but do we always get it right? Is Christ alone enough? Or have additional things crept in and distorted the message? Do we correctly understand the roles of The Law, Grace, Good Works, and Repentance?

We will be watching parts of the Christian documentary, “American Gospel: Christ Alone”, with Nigel Owen facilitating breaks and questions for discussion. This film explores the Gospel message along with some of the ways it can be distorted. Come along with your thoughts on how we can best present the Gospel and share it with others.

About Nigel Owen

Nigel Owen came to faith, at university, when he heard a clear presentation of the gospel through the ministry of Student Life. Nigel went on to join staff with Student Life where he spent nearly 10 years working with students and defending the gospel on campus. Nigel now works in Quality Administration and is passionate about Apologetics.

The Deity of Christ

Did Jesus really claim to God?

Many non-Christians are happy to accept Jesus as a good moral teacher or someone who had some wise things to say. Some people may even go as far as saying that Jesus had some divine wisdom or anointing from God. But most people will stop short of believing that Jesus ever claimed to be God, let alone was divine in any way. There are even some professing Christians with wrong ideas about Jesus Christ.

Nigel Owen will look at some of the ideas the world has about Jesus. He will then go on to examine Jesus’ claims to divinity in the Bible. He will show why these claims simply can’t be ignored and that they demand a response from us.

Human Worth and an Antidote to Racism

The question of human identity lies at the heart of many contentious issues nowadays… from the abortion and euthanasia debates to the issue of racism which our culture is once again grappling with.

In this talk, Matthew Price will show how the Judeo-Christian worldview uniquely provides an adequate basis for human worth and unity, and will delve into some of the modern genetic evidence which verifies these biblical truths.

About Matthew Price

Matthew Price will be a familiar face, as part of the local Thinking Matters team. Having been raised in a Christian environment, and having studied science here and abroad, he has a keen interest in the interaction of faith and science, and more fundamentally, in the philosophies upon which they rest. He is passionate about dialoguing with and helping others understand the rich and robust heritage we have as believers in Christ.
