What is Reasoned Faith?

Reasoned Faith is a monthly gathering held in Wellington (The Life Centre) which seeks to deepen people’s understanding and awareness of various Christian issues and culturally relevant topics discussed from a biblical worldview.

UPCOMING EVENTS

May’s Topic: Engaging well with arguments against Christianity

Have you ever been in a conversation with a workmate, friend or family member and felt ill-equipped to respond to their challenges about Christianity? Or, do you fear being in those conversations? This month will be a fun, practical session with lots of examples that will help you in everyday conversations or debates about Christianity. We are going to learn how to use logic and reason to engage well and respond to common arguments/fallacies used to disprove Christianity. It is our hope that this session will help you feel more confident in God conversations, avoid getting sidetracked, and lead people to truth.

What: Engaging well with arguments against Christianity
When: 7pm, Monday 27 May 2019
Where: The Life Centre (21 Hania Street, Mount Victoria, Wellington 6011 – building next to The Street Church).

PREVIOUS EVENTS – 2019

April’s Topic: Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide – Current societal thinking and a Christian perspective

A longstanding Christian view is that euthanasia and assisted suicide takes us outside the providence of God and should not be condoned. Parliament is currently considering a Bill based on an alternative view that the state should allow doctors to administer lethal drugs to end the lives of people in some circumstances. This month we will consider arguments for and against euthanasia and assisted suicide based on an analysis of over 39,000 submissions on the Bill. We will also discuss the question from a Christian perspective within a New Zealand societal context.

What: Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide
When: 7pm, Monday 29 April 2019
Where: The Life Centre (21 Hania Street, Mount Victoria, Wellington 6011 – building next to The Street Church).

March’s Topic: Understanding Transgender Identity – A Christian response to the Gender Identity Phenomenon

The Bible speaks unambiguously of the binary nature of human gender – “In the image of God He created them, Male and Female He created them” (Gen 1.27). Yet within contemporary secular culture today, traditional conceptions of what it means to be a woman or a man are being rapidly challenged and re-imaged. So how does the Church understand and respond to this gender identity phenomenon? This month’s talk will attempt to answer this question from a Christian perspective and offer a practical and compassion-filled response to some of the issues surrounding transgender ideology/identity.

What: Understanding Transgender Identity
When: 7pm, Monday 18 March 2019
Where: The Life Centre (21 Hania Street, Mount Victoria, Wellington 6011 – building next to The Street Church).

February’s Topic: Does God Exist?

How do we know God exists? And how do we explain the evidence for God’s existence to others? This month Gudio is going to help us answer such questions and provide us with a road map to having these important conversations about the fundamental questions of life. This talk will be aimed at helping us articulate reasons for why God exists in a simple and effective way. Such conversations aren’t as hard as they may sound and it is hoped you will leave with some practical tools and tips.

What: Does God Exist?
When: 7pm, Monday 18 February 2019
Where: The Life Centre (21 Hania Street, Mount Victoria, Wellington 6011 – building next to The Street Church).

PREVIOUS EVENTS – 2018

November’s Topic: How to share our faith in Jesus

In Mark 16:15 Jesus commanded his disciples to: “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation”. How do we share the gospel authentically? What would we say if someone asked us to help them become a Christian, and/or why we believe what we do? How do we overcome our fears and reservations about sharing who Jesus is? This month we will discuss such questions and provide some practical tools and tips on how to effectively share our faith.

What: How to share our faith in Jesus
When: 7pm, Monday 19 November 2018
Where: The Life Centre (21 Hania Street, Mount Victoria, Wellington 6011 – building next to The Street Church).

October’s Topic: What did Jesus say about Hell?

Writing about Hell, CS Lewis said this: “There is no doctrine which I would more willingly remove from Christianity than this, if it lay in my power. But it has the full support of scripture and, specially of Our Lord’s own words“. Lewis is right, Jesus told us that whoever believes in Him will have eternal life (John 3:15) but he also frequently spoke of Hell. So what did he say? And as uncomfortable as it is, how should we think about Hell? This month, we are going to  discuss such questions.

What: What did Jesus say about Hell?
When: 7pm, Monday 29 October 2018
Where: The Life Centre (21 Hania Street, Mount Victoria, Wellington 6011 – building next to The Street Church).

September’s Topic: Compassion without compromise – questions of God and sexuality

As Christians, how do we authentically love our friends, family members, colleagues and others who identify as being lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and/or queer (LGBTIQ) in a way which is faithful to the Gospel? What does the Bible actually say about same-sex attraction and how can we as Christians and the Church reach out to those in the LGBTIQ community in truth and love? This month we are going to consider such questions. The heart of this talk will be about grace, truth and the example of Jesus.

What: Compassion without compromise – questions of God and sexuality?
When: 7pm, Monday 17 September 2018
Where: The Life Centre (21 Hania Street, Mount Victoria, Wellington 6011 – building next to The Street Church).

August’s Topic: If God is good why is there suffering?

This is a question which many of us quietly ponder and at times struggle with. It becomes even more difficult when we or our loved ones experience terrible evil or suffering. This month, we are going to offer a couple of ways to approach this question, from both a head and heart perspective. There are no “perfect” answers to this question, but there is a God who loves us and suffered with and for us.

What: If God is good why is there suffering?
When: 7pm, Monday 27 August 2018
Where: The Life Centre (21 Hania Street, Mount Victoria, Wellington 6011 – building next to The Street Church).

July’s Topic: Who is Jesus? Jesus amongst other ‘gods’ and religions

Who is Jesus and how does he compare when looking at other religions? According to the 2013 census, the three major religions other than Christianity in New Zealand are Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam. So what do we know about these religions and how do we talk about and show who Jesus is?

What: Who is Jesus? Jesus amongst other ‘gods’ and religions
When: 7pm, Monday 23 July 2018
Where: The Life Centre (21 Hania Street, Mount Victoria, Wellington 6011 – building next to The Street Church).

June’s Topic: What is Faith? Just blind or unthinking belief?

Noted atheist Richard Dawkins infamously said:

“Faith is the great cop-out, the great excuse to evade the need to think and evaluate evidence. Faith is belief in spite of, even perhaps because of, the lack of evidence,”

As Christians we are taught to have faith in Jesus and the promises of God (Gal 3:22). So how do we respond to a challenge like Dawkins? Do we have to suspend critical thought and blindly believe to be a Christian? Come and join us on Monday 25 June to hear a response to Dawkins and how to understand what faith is from a Christian perspective.

What: What is Faith? Just blind or unthinking belief?
When: 7pm, Monday 25 June 2018
