Reasons for Faith | Hamilton

Reasons for Faith is a monthly Thinking Matters Hamilton gathering, run in association with, and held at Lighthouse Christian Fellowship. Occasionally, we host guest speakers, but the usual format is to screen DVD’s and have discussions which feature topics that are directly relevant to fulfilling the call of 1 Peter 3:15-16, which says:

In your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.

Apologetics can sometimes be a bit heavy duty but our aim is to be intensely practical and make the presentations and discussions suitable for people who have a beating heart for the gospel and who want to grow their understanding specifically in the area of secular challenges to Christian faith. Over the past generation Western society has undergone a social change that is nothing short of a revolution, and while the Christian message never changes, the methods of conveying it certainly do.

  • We make arguments, but we are not argumentative.
  • We grapple with ideas in a way that helps fulfill the most important commandment, which in part says to love the Lord your God with all your mind (Matthew 22:37).

It is a tremendously faith-building exercise to discover just how strong the arguments for biblical Christianity really are. The apostle Peter encourages us to always be prepared to give an answer regarding the reason for our hope in Christ. In these monthly meetings we will discuss and learn many such answers.

Evil and Suffering

If God is all-powerful and all-loving, why is there so much evil and suffering in the world? British philosopher, Richard Swinburne, said, “This is, and always has been, the most important and influential argument against the existence of God.” Christians do not claim to have a full answer to this immense problem, nevertheless we do have many real faith-building insights. At Reasons for Faith, we will be screening a selection of responses to the question of evil and suffering from leading Christian thinkers, including John Lennox, Ravi Zacharias, and Tim Keller. We will discuss the material in small groups, and comprehensive notes will be provided.
