Reasons for Faith | Hamilton

Reasons for Faith is a monthly Thinking Matters Hamilton gathering, run in association with, and held at Lighthouse Christian Fellowship. Occasionally, we host guest speakers, but the usual format is to screen DVD’s and have discussions which feature topics that are directly relevant to fulfilling the call of 1 Peter 3:15-16, which says:

In your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.

Apologetics can sometimes be a bit heavy duty but our aim is to be intensely practical and make the presentations and discussions suitable for people who have a beating heart for the gospel and who want to grow their understanding specifically in the area of secular challenges to Christian faith. Over the past generation Western society has undergone a social change that is nothing short of a revolution, and while the Christian message never changes, the methods of conveying it certainly do.

  • We make arguments, but we are not argumentative.
  • We grapple with ideas in a way that helps fulfill the most important commandment, which in part says to love the Lord your God with all your mind (Matthew 22:37).

It is a tremendously faith-building exercise to discover just how strong the arguments for biblical Christianity really are. The apostle Peter encourages us to always be prepared to give an answer regarding the reason for our hope in Christ. In these monthly meetings we will discuss and learn many such answers.

Why Thinking Matters: the Importance of Apologetics to the Modern Church

7pm, Tuesday 17th April 2018

In this talk Rodney gives an introduction to apologetics and the growing need for Christians to be better prepared to give clear and gracious reasons for our faith. He highlights the attacks Christianity is under and the need for the Church to be better equipped to respond to them.  He discusses the first great commandment and the need for us to seek and love God with our minds, as much as our heart, soul and strength – and how that has impacted his own faith.

Presented by Rodney Lake

Rodney is the National Director foRodney Laker Thinking Matters NZ Foundation and speaks at churches, youth groups, Christian schools and to non-believers at outreach events around the country on the reasons why Christianity is true. He is an adjunct apologetics lecturer at Faith Bible College and teaches regular ‘Introduction to Christianity’ courses at Bethlehem College and serves on the board of Bethlehem College Limited. He is passionate about seeing people loving and seeking God with all their mind, developing a resilient faith that is supported with solid reasons to believe, while confidently and graciously sharing that faith with others.
