It’s been said that the closest thing to a universal faith in the Western world is the belief in the dignity, worth, and equal rights of human beings. Christians can easily justify this belief, but it’s a significant challenge for others to explain why they actually hold to it. Our worldview has a huge impact on how we perceive ourselves – how we establish our identity.
In a culture marked by extreme individualism, the message is: “Don’t try to get affirmation from others. Affirm yourself because you are doing what you want to do. Be who you want to be, and it doesn’t matter what anybody else thinks.” There’s a certain amount of truth in this, but also some major and serious pitfalls. Concerning the Christian worldview, a charge has been laid that the doctrine of sin is bleak and pessimistic about human nature, placing little value on life in this world. But in reality the Christian worldview has a much higher view of human life than any competing system.
In Christ we find an identity that doesn’t crush us or exclude others.
