Reasons for Faith | Hamilton

Reasons for Faith is a monthly Thinking Matters Hamilton gathering, run in association with, and held at Lighthouse Christian Fellowship. Occasionally, we host guest speakers, but the usual format is to screen DVD’s and have discussions which feature topics that are directly relevant to fulfilling the call of 1 Peter 3:15-16, which says:

In your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.

Apologetics can sometimes be a bit heavy duty but our aim is to be intensely practical and make the presentations and discussions suitable for people who have a beating heart for the gospel and who want to grow their understanding specifically in the area of secular challenges to Christian faith. Over the past generation Western society has undergone a social change that is nothing short of a revolution, and while the Christian message never changes, the methods of conveying it certainly do.

  • We make arguments, but we are not argumentative.
  • We grapple with ideas in a way that helps fulfill the most important commandment, which in part says to love the Lord your God with all your mind (Matthew 22:37).

It is a tremendously faith-building exercise to discover just how strong the arguments for biblical Christianity really are. The apostle Peter encourages us to always be prepared to give an answer regarding the reason for our hope in Christ. In these monthly meetings we will discuss and learn many such answers.

Contemporary Apologetics for our Post-Christian Context

Our speaker this month is Mark Powell who is best known as CEO of the Warehouse Group for the five years to the end of 2015. Included in his qualifications is a Theology degree and a Masters degree in apologetics. He has spoken widely on apologetics subjects and has shared the stage with Ravi Zacharias in Auckland. His subject will be “Contemporary Apologetics for our Post-Christian Context.” Many people adopt a curious mix of Modernist and Postmodernist beliefs. Knowing this helps us better understand the people we seek to reach with the gospel.
